BBC The Voice: Tom Jones praises Norfolk contestant

Toni Warne – (C) Wall To Wall – Photographer: Guy Levy A Norfolk singer was praised by music legend Tom Jones as she competed for a place in the semi-finals of BBC talent show The Voice.

Gorleston mum Toni Warne gave a rendition of Elton John’s Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word in last night’s show.

Her coach, acclaimed pop star Jessie J, praised the authenticity of her performance and told the 34-year-old: I believed you.

And fellow judge, veteran Welsh vocalist Tom Jones, said: I loved it.

You moved and you got into the song.

You have so much emotion when you sing – you use it to your advantage and shine with it.

Mum-of-two Miss Warne, who works as a customer service advisor in a bank, told the panel – which is completed by The Script frontman Danny O Donoghue and Black Eyed Peas founder will.I.am – that the competition means everything to her.

It would mean the absolute world to get through, said Miss Warne, of Jenner Road.

Singing is my life.

Miss Warne has had alopecia since she was seven years old and hopes to use the platform to inspire others with the condition To find out if she progresses to the semi-finals, tune into the results show on BBC One at 7.25pm tonight.

PHOTO UPDATE: Aylsham mans delight at winning Norwich Beer Festival logo contest

Anthony Miles with his winning 2012 Camra Norwich Beer Festival logo.

PHOTO: ANTONY KELLY The winning logo to be used at the 2012 Norwich beer festival has been unveiled – and it incorporates the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in its design.

Anthony Miles’s topical design of a dragon on a diamond will be used to promote the 35th Norwich and Norfolk Campaign For Real Ale beer festival on its usual range of merchandise of glasses and t-shirts.

Mr Miles, 44, from Holly Walk, Aylsham, said: This was the first time I entered the competition so I was surprised to win.

It had to be a design reflecting the Queen’s Jubilee.

The aviation engineer is a member of the festival’s organising committee, but none of the judges were informed beforehand in case there was any cry of favouritism.

Festival organiser Martin Ward said: As usual we had many fine entries from all ages, including several newcomers who pitted their designs against our competition regulars.

With a large number of entries, the judging process was again lengthy and difficult with many logo designs having significant merit.

After due deliberation, a final short list of two designs was selected, with one particular design really standing out from the others.

This year’s beer festival runs from Monday October 29 to Saturday November 3 at its usual venue of St Andrews and Blackfriars halls, Norwich.

Wu-Tang Clan mastermind RZA’s sophomore solo project comes with high expectations. Unfortunately, there’s much on Digital Bullet to suggest that the RZA’s beat-making skills need to be resurrected. The largely sample-based vocal loops employed on “Can’t Loose” and spontaneous tempo changes on “Brooklyn Babies” hint at the full brilliance once illustrated by one of hip-hop’s most avant-garde producers. Similarly, “Must Be Bobby” boasts some of the off-kilter keyboard sounds that have become a trademark of his productions. However, long gone are the experimental beats and rhymes first heard on Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Instead, one is left with confusing tracks in which barely decipherable rapid-fire rhymes about bedding women and shooting guns are strung together. “Black Widow Pt 2″ is another one of those mediocre and offensive songs where lyrical loose cannon Ol’ Dirty Bastard utters juvenile profanities. While “Show You Love” is a timely ode to the full range of Wu diehards, Bobby Digital’s sexcapade rhymes square off one too many times against his 5% Nation of Islam musings. Doesn’t one style completely undermine the other? Well, “Build Strong” kind of sums up why RZA’s once dominant career is spiralling downwards when he raps that he’s “physically enslaved by the luxuries of this world/ So I behave like a man inside the grave, who’s life is lost.” –Dalton Higgins

Bela Fleck is one of the greatest five-string banjo players performing today. Beginning in the 1970s, he honed his lightning-fast chops performing bluegrass, then moved on to contemporary jazz and fusion sounds. With this album, he broadens his horizons once again by performing an entire programme of classical-music transcriptions. Reminiscent of classical-guitar albums by John Williams (who makes a guest appearance here), the disc traverses a wide repertoire–from Chopin mazurkas to Bach’s Two and Three Part Inventions. Throughout, Fleck displays a feathery touch on his banjo, and his instrument offers a pleasant, brassy tone with very little twang. The technique he displays on Perpetual Motion is astounding and a refreshing change of pace from the smooth grooves found on the banjoist’s Flecktones recordings. The arrangements are generally minimalist and understated, but violinist Joshua Bell, bassist Edgar Meyer, mandolinist Chris Thile and percussionist Evelyn Glennie join in on this ground-breaking disc. Bluegrass purists may be disappointed, but classical fans will be astounded by how perfectly natural Fleck’s banjo sounds on these works. –Jason Verlinde

Compact Jazz Cut Rate

Compiled from three separate concert venues and dating from 1957, 1958, and 1963, this 1987 remastered CD lacks the kind of unity we have come to expect from Sarah Vaughan’s other recordings. Nine songs from a three-day Tivoli Gardens stint in Copenhagen (1963) include five songs not previously released. These Copenhagen concerts feature a very effective, simple accompaniment of piano, bass, and drums. Two tracks from Mister Kelly’s in Chicago (1957) and two from London House, Chicago (1958), complete the selections, with her own trio accompanying her on the Mister Kelly’s tracks while the London House tracks feature a brass section–two trumpets and a trombone–from Count Basie’s band, along with a tenor sax.

Most of the songs are standards which Vaughan has recorded many times at least as well (and sometimes better). Her voice in the fifties is higher, thinner, and lighter than it is in the sixties, and she sticks to ballads, primarily, though she does jazz them up and get swinging near the end of most of them. Her imagination and her sense of timing and tempo are obvious in 1957 and 1958, but by the 1960s, we hear a richness we don’t hear in the earlier years. Her sense of musicianship has developed more fully by 1963, and it is in these tracks that she sounds most like the musician she became in the latter part of her career.

The duo of pianist John Taylor and vocalist Norma Winstone once approached ECM proprietor Manfred Eicher (“in desperation, really”, Winstone admitted later) with a demo tape. Eicher suggested adding a fluegelhorn to the duo, prompting them to contact their old associate Kenny Wheeler. Out of such happenstance was born this unique trio which almost single-handedly (three-handedly?) invented a musical environment which combined elements of chamber music with an intimate yet exploratory form of jazz. The approach was not entirely alien to jazz listeners–and it’s no coincidence that one of Eicher’s formative influences was Jimmy Giuffre, whose 1961 clarinet/piano/bass recording he was to reissue–yet Azimuth both refined and redefined the territory. Winstone’s wordless vocals had been a trademark since her work with Michael Garrick, when she replaced a departing saxophonist by using her voice as a front-line instrument. Taylor and Wheeler each possess an astonishing musical intelligence which connects perfectly with Winstone’s singing–and nowhere better than on this recording, despite the gap of several years which exists between it and the group’s earlier output. –Roger Thomas

Country music was, originally, home-made music. It described the births, marriages and deaths that happened in every community. It celebrated love, just as it bemoaned the ill-fortune that came to every man. It was music with which all felt they could identify. As such, it occupied a unique place in white culture. The music was not manufactured, as in Tin Pan Alley, nor sophisticated, and this episode describes the process by which this change came about.

Finally, we will be backstage at the Grand Ole Opry during one of its regular nationwide broadcasts, with a blessing to finish from Grand Ole Gospel Time.

This episode includes performances from the likes of; Jimmie Rodgers, Roy Acuff, Doug Kershaw and Minnie Pearl. There are also interviews with Ernest Tubb, Roy Rogers and Tex Ritter.
